The Future of Europe: Spiritual Values and Citizenship

Contributions

CHRISTOPHE FERNANDEZ: via email on 7 February 2002:

I would like to register with you my enthusiastic support for the importance of Culture within the Quaker Vision for Europe, and The Future of Europe: Spiritual Values and citizenship. Around Europe of January 2002 refers to cultural integrity, and the opportunities for a Quaker Creativity to inform that integrity are exciting.

May I commend the [following] seminal documents on Culture from UNESCO [which] I found valuable in considering governance, a vision for Europe, spirituality and citizenship:

• Our Creative Diversity

• Creativity and the Arts

• Recommendations concerning the status of the Artist

I would be most grateful to hear what you and the Council think about the resources contained in the documents.

“In our infinite world of questioning and doubt, creative imagination and initiative on the part of individuals, communities and societies is ever more required. What are some of the ways in which creativity should be promoted today, not just in the arts, but also in the domains of science and technology and in the theory and practice of governance?” (UNESCO, Our Creative Diversity)

In all, the vision to liberate cultural policy from its narrow confines in order to uphold creative vibrancy in governance, public services, education and life-long education, planning, design, development, respecting deeper values and encouraging the flourishing of human existence as a whole is a wonderful challenge and opportunity. (op. cit. UNESCO)

“Development divorced from its human or cultural context is growth without a soul. Economic development in its full flowering is part of a people's culture.” (op.cit UNESCO)
