QCEA responds to European Commission Consultation on the Citizens’ Initiative

Article 11 of the Treaty on European Union (as amended by the Lisbon Treaty) provides for a new way in which citizens can participate in EU policy-making. The Citizens’ Initiative, as it is called, allows citizens to ‘invite’ the European Commission to propose legislation if they can gather 1 million signatures from citizens in a significant number of Member States.
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the detailed implementation of this new provision by publishing a Green Paper. The consultation is open until 31 January 2010. The consultation and supporting documents can be accessed on the European Commission website where you can also find details of how to respond.

EU Budget Review

In 2006 European decision-makers decided to undertake a ‘full, wide ranging review covering all aspects of EU spending, including the CAP, and of resources, including the UK rebate, to report in 2008/9’. In September 2007 the Commission launched a public consultation to prepare for the review, in which all interested parties are invited to contribute.
